Botox use is at the top of the charts, again! The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released their stats for cosmetic surgery and minimally-invasive procedures in 2014. Overall aesthetic procedures, such as those offered in our Santa Barbara medical spa, are on the rise. Here are the top 5 minimally-invasive treatments performed in 2014:
There were almost 14,000,000 minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures done in 2014. We believe that these treatments are so popular because they yield great results with little (or no) downtime and are affordable to most.
For those of you who are not as familiar with dermal fillers, Sculptra, and/or the wrinkle-reducers Botox and Dysport, we will happily share with you some information about each of them. Perhaps it will help you to make a decision about getting an injectable treatment or encourage you to add a new treatment to your anti-aging arsenal.
Botox and Dysport Botox and Dysport treatments are one of our most popular services at Evolutions, year round. This is not surprising! In 2012, there were over 6 million Botox or Dysport treatments in the US. Botox and Dysport are forms of botulinum toxin type A. They are both injected under the skin to treat overactive muscles in the forehead area. Botox and Dysport block the signals to the muscle that tell them to contract, resulting in a smooth, frown-less forehead. Botox or Dysport can take from 1 to 7 days to “set in” and start working. Both are FDA approved and are deemed safe and effective in the treatment of facial wrinkles. Dysport is a smaller molecule than Botox, so the units are different (i.e. 20 units of Botox equal 60 units of Dysport). Results are temporary and last about 3 to 4 months.
Restylane and Perlane: Dermal Fillers Restylane and Perlane are in the same family of products. They are both dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid that are formulated to act like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid. These are injected under the skin to fill in moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane can also be used to add fullness to the lips. Replacing volume lost in the face can help restore a more youthful appearance. Perlane differs from Restylane in the average size of the particles and the depth of the injection. Your Evolutions clinician will help you determine which product is best for you. Results are instantaneous and can last 6 months or more (in most cases).
Radiesse Dermal Filler Radiesse is also a dermal filler. It differs from Restylane or Perlane in that it is comprised of calcium microspheres in gel. Radiesse is also injected under the skin to provide volume and structure in areas where volume has diminished. The bonus that Radiesse offers is that it works to stimulate your body to produce it’s own natural collagen. As the calcium gel is absorbed, your own natural collagen will remain behind, giving you volume and structure. Results are instantaneous and have been clinically proven to last one year or more.
Sculptra Aesthetic Our newest treatment, Sculptra Aesthetic, is a bit different than hyaluronic dermal fillers or Radiesse. This new facial injectable does not give instantaneous results, instead subtle results are achieved over time. Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for years in dissolvable stitches. Sculptra works deep within the dermis to gradually restore the collagen foundation that is lost as we age. With a more solid foundation, fullness is steadily returned to facial wrinkles. Results can last two years or more. Most clients require a full treatment of Sculptra Aesthetic, which is an average of three injection sessions over a few months, for the best outcome. Full results are gradually seen over 3 to 6 months.
A Note About Dermal Fillers and Botox/Dysport Treatments If you’ve never had a dermal filler or Dysport/Botox treatment, you will have to come in for a consultation with our Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Practitioner or Dr. Perkins prior to your first treatment. Call us today to book your complimentary consultation (or submit a consultation request online) and/or to make an appointment for Injectable Week (805-687-0212).
Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Terry Perkins, and founder of Evolutions Medical & Day Spa, has been an advocate of the use of Botox before many of us even knew about it. In fact, Dr. Perkins was one of 16 doctors selected by the FDA to conduct a study in 1999 of Botox which led to FDA approval of Botox for cosmetic use. Since then Botox has become a very popular treatment for those who want to “erase” their frown and wrinkle lines from their foreheads. However, the latest exciting news is that Botox may also be beneficial in keeping wrinkles at bay. Repeated weakening of the muscles over time can help prevent the wrinkle(s) from forming or from becoming too deep.
To further support this, a study was done on identical twin sisters to evaluate the long term effects of Botox use. One twin received Botox approximately two to three times per year in the forehead and glabellar region (frown lines between the eyebrows) for 13 years. The other twin received Botox only twice over the 13 year study (at years 3 and 7). The results showed that imprinted forehead and glabellar lines were not evident in the twin that was regularly treated with Botox but were evident in the twin that was only treated twice. It was also noted that untreated facial areas (the nasolabial folds – the line that forms from the nose to the corner of the mouth) showed comparable aging in both twins.
Recently an article that was published on “Today Health” cited the twin’s study and also referred to an article by JAMA Dermatology which stated that it is “rarely too early” to start the “conservative and thoughtful use of neuromodulators [i.e., Botox], fillers and noninvasive energy-based treatments.” The article goes on to say that it is not endorsing the use of Botox in children or teens, nor are we, and even the 20s may be too early as well. Signs of aging varies by individual and often will depend on many factors, including a person’s skin type, their genes, and any environmental damage (sun and UV exposure), but normally begins in the 30s for most people.
The best time to start Botox as a preventative treatment to help inhibit the progression of deeper wrinkles would be at the onset of wrinkles (even if they are very mild). At Evolutions Medical & Day Spa, we always offer a complimentary consultation to help our clients individually decide what may be best for them.
Many of our clients feel very fortunate that Botox and Dysport treatments became available to help transform their “look”, literally turning their frown upside down. The next generation of Botox users are even luckier to have the option to prevent wrinkles before they start!

Thank you to all who attended our event last week to help us celebrate our 6th anniversary! The party was scheduled to begin at 4PM but we had guests lining up well before that so they could be one of the first 50 people to receive a gift bag which was filled with goodies from Revitalash and NuCelle skin care products in addition to loads of product samples from our preferred skin care companies!
Dr. Perkins and the staff at Evolutions mingled with guests throughout the evening and were delighted to watch guests win prizes on the prize wheel, receive complimentary mini-facial treatments and complimentary Colorescience make-up applications, and enjoy appetizers, cupcakes, and drinks. Many representatives from skin care lines were on-hand for interactive skin care education and took pleasure in seeing how their products or treatments have beautified our clientele!
The party continued the rest of the week as the Evolutions’ staff pulled names of winners for the many different gift baskets and called guests to notify them of their winnings on Friday and Saturday.

Many of our clients at EvolutionsMedical Spa Santa Barbara are anxious to keep their skin in the best condition that they can. The questions we receive – from women in their 20s to 60s and beyond – have inspired us to invite a skin expert to guest author about skin care tips and concerns for women of all ages. Some posts will be geared towards a certain age group while others will be general beauty tips for all ages to enjoy!
Skin Care Tips for Women in Their 40s
Forties can be considered a time of transition for many. For a large majority of women, this time marks the onset of peri-menopause – the beginning of menopause – and subsequently a decline in the estrogen and progesterone hormones. Unfortunately your fertility is not the only thing that is affected by this change of life. Your collagen, elasatin and other crucial components of your skin’s underlying support system also begin to decline leading to the traditional symptoms of aging: wrinkles and fine lines, age spots and hyperpigmentation, saggy skin and a sallow complexion.
We all wish that we could wave a magic wand to recapture what we had in our youth! Fortunately, in this day and age, there are ways to slow or reverse some of these changes. Following are four suggested skin care tips (and a bonus tip!) to turn back the time:
Treat Your Body Well, Inside and Out: We know how important it is to eat our fruits and vegetables, both full of antioxidants, but how realistically do we eat all servings recommended on a daily basis? One very simple solution is to add a glass of professional quality supplements to your daily routine. BioPharma Scientific Superfood Solution supplements are only available through a health professional – find yours in Santa Barbara at Evolutions Medical Spa – and are packed with powerful nutrients to keep your skin, and body, healthy. Read about all supplements in a past blog post – we recommend the NanOmega supplement which boosts skin health alongside an assortment of other positive benefits.
Hydrate: Yes, drink your water! And hydrate your skin with a quality moisturizer. With a reduced load of hormones, your skin may become dry and dull, so moisturizer is a must. Remember that whatever you rub on your skin is absorbed, so make sure that your moisturizer is a product that functions underneath the skin, as well as above it. Your goal is to combat free radicals – which is the cause of cell damage and aging – so use a product that is formulated with this in mind. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Perkins highly recommends REVALÉSKIN® products because they contain CoffeeBerry® extract which is rich in polyphenol antioxidants, such as chlorogenic acid, condensed proanthocyanidins, quinic acid, and ferulic acid, all of which are key fighters of free radical molecules!
Exfoliate: As we age, cell turnover of your skin slows to almost 40 days (whereas it is about every 28 days in younger adults) which means the skin is thicker and/or dryer resulting in dull skin often accompanied by an uneven texture. Exfoliating the skin helps to accelerate cell turnover and allows your skin care products to absorb more effectively. A simple way to exfoliate at home is to use a gentle exfoliant – like the AFA Exfoliating Gel available in three different strengths – that removes dead skin cells with little to no irritation. Periodically a medical-grade chemical peel can compliment your skin care routine along with mechanical exfoliation such as Vibradermabrasion.
Lighten, Brighten and Tighten: Hyperpigmentation, sun spots and age spots can be treated in many ways. Often recommended is the Obagi Condition and Enhance System that is a prescription-strength skin care system that treats environmental and sun damage as well as aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. It is also the system recommended for those who are getting the Obagi Blue Peel (the deepest peel) to see optimum results. There are several ways to treat skin laxity including Dr. Perkins’ Total Tightening Treatment which combines two non-invasive skin tightening treatments available today. There are other skin tightening treatments that are available at Evolutions Medical Spa also. A consultation can help further determine which treatment would be best for you.
Bonus Tip! Freeze It and Fill It In!We are talking about your wrinkles, of course! Botox and/or Dysport, both FDA-approved for cosmetic use, are a great (temporary) way to smooth forehead wrinkles and crows feet. Our skilled medical aesthetic nurses can inject Botox/Dysport so as to not alter your natural expressions or features. Botox/Dysport treatments typically last 3 to 4 months. Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse, replace the volume lost in our face as we age and can last six months to a year.
