Frequently Asked Questions About Sculptra
Sculptra Aesthetic is a collagen stimulator. Collagen is a key structural component of your skin. As we age, our bodies tend to produce less collagen, which helps lead to wrinkles and older-looking faces.
The main ingredient of Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades. Once injected, Sculptra stimulates your body to produce more of its own collagen. Because of this, the results are not seen immediately, but gradually over a 3 to 6 month time period.
Most dermal fillers are liquid or gel substances such as hyaluronic acid. The results in filling wrinkles and contouring the skin with traditional fillers are immediate. The results last anywhere from 6 to 12 months or more, depending on the type of filler used and where it is placed. Sculptra works in a different way. The product does not provide any “filling” by itself. It works by stimulating the body to produce more of its own collagen. Though the results of Sculptra are not immediate, they last much longer (2 years or more).
You are likely to be a good candidate for Sculptra if you:
• A) are experiencing a loss in facial collagen due to age and other environmental factors
• B) would like a product that produces long term results (2 years or more)
• C) are willing to commit to a series of treatment sessions (3 is average) and are okay with waiting 3 – 6 months to see final results
People who are not good candidates for Sculptra include those who are pregnant, nursing an infant, have a history of a bleeding disorder, have an autoimmune disease, or experience abnormal scarring.
Sculptra begins to work within the deep dermis, where the collagen that is stimulated to be produced helps to reinforce your skin’s structure. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness in facial wrinkles, folds, and depressions that have developed over time.
Final results are typically seen in 3 – 6 months and will usually last for more than 2 years.
In order to achieve the desired results, it is necessary to come in for a series of treatments that are usually performed 4 to 6 weeks apart. The number of treatments required can be anywhere from 2 to 4 treatments, but the average is 3.
Treatment time for each session is usually only about 30 minutes.
At Evolutions, we take great care to make our clients as comfortable as possible during all of our treatments. The clinician will use a very small needle to put a numbing agent into the areas where Sculptra will be injected. Consequently, most people consider the procedure to have a highly tolerable level of discomfort. You should not have to miss any work. There will likely be some minor initial swelling and pinkness in the areas where the product was injected, but for most people, this is not substantial enough to miss work. If there is any bruising, it should be able to be covered up with make-up by the next day.
Sculptra is FDA approved in the United States and has been used in over 30 countries around the world since 1999. The main ingredient in Sculptra, poly-L-lactic acid, has been used for years in dissolvable stitches and is naturally and safely absorbed by the body.
The most commonly reported side effects are redness, swelling, tenderness, injection site pain or itching, bruising, and bleeding. In almost all cases any side effects are temporary.
Yes! Sculptra is used very effectively in combination with dermal fillers such as Restylane or Perlane and neuromodulators such as Dysport or Botox. Sculptra helps to stimulate long-lasting collagen production that supports the underlying skin structure. Other dermal fillers can fine-tune the shapes and contours of the face and lips. Neuromodulators work on dynamic wrinkles in areas such as the “frown lines”, “crow’s feet”, and forehead lines. In the hands of skilled injectors like those at Evolutions, all three treatment types can be used synergistically to create a natural and more youthful look.
