Dermal Fillers in Santa Barbara

As we age, the natural volume and fullness in our face diminishes. While we can exercise to help maintain our body’s physique, there is not an at-home (or at-the-gym) remedy for facial aging. Over-the-counter creams and serums may give a “temporary” lift but they cannot provide the structure that is needed for longer-lasting results.

Fortunately, dermal fillers can replace the volume and fullness that has been lost. In addition to volume replacement, fillers can be used to correct skin imperfections like wrinkles, acne scars, fine lines, and can also be used to enhance the fullness of the lips. Many of the fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA) that is a naturally-occurring substance found in the skin. HA helps deliver nutrients, retain moisture and softness, and adds volume to the skin. Dermal filler results are instantaneous and can last 6 months to a year or more!

Here is information about some of our more popular dermal fillers at Evolutions:

Restylane and Restylane LyftThese FDA-approved fillers can be used for correction of mid-face contour deficiencies and for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles. They are comprised mostly of hyaluronic acid. They can last from 6 months to a year or more. In a clinical trial, patient satisfaction rate was 95.2% two months post treatment and 73% 12 months post treatment.

Juvederm
This HA filler is also FDA-approved and used to treat deficiencies in the cheeks in addition to lines and wrinkles. With optimal treatment, Juvederm has been proven to last one year in wrinkles and folds. When treated again after 1 year, patients needed less product to achieve their results.

Radiesse
This filler differs from Juvederm and Perlane because it is primarily comprised of Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. When injected, Radiesse provides immediate volume and correction. It continues to work by stimulating the body to produce its own natural collagen. Over time, as the gel is absorbed and the body metabolizes the CaHA, your own natural collagen will be left behind. Radiesse is also FDA-approved.

Scultpra
If you are looking to replace lost collagen, Scupltra is a great option. The main ingredient of Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades. Unlike Radiesse, Perlane, and Juvederm, results are not instantaneous. You will see results gradually over 3 to 6 months and they typically last 2 years. An excellent option for those that don’t need immediate correction and are looking for longer lasting results.

Santa Barbara Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk Filler Special

PERLANE IS NOW RESTYLANE LYFT

Restylane Lyft Santa BarbaraMany of you are familiar with Perlane, which has been our most popular filler for many years. We are pleased to announce that Perlane has received FDA approval for correction of mid-face contour deficiencies.  This is the same area that Voluma is approved to treat.  Perlane is now the only filler approved to treat both the mid-face area and the nasolabial folds (the lines from the corner of the mouth to the nose).

With this approval, Galderma, the maker of Perlane, has changed the name of Perlane to Restylane Lyft.

Due to costs associated with receiving an additional FDA approval, Galderma has instituted a price increase on the new Restylane Lyft. Consequently, Evolutions will also be instituting a modest price increase ($25) as Perlane changes to Lyft. We placed an order just before the price increase, so our new pricing will not go into effect until September 1st. Call us and book before the end of the month to lock in old pricing.

INTRODUCING RESTYLANE SILK

Galderma also recently launched Restylane Silk, a filler designed specifically for the lips and lines around them.

Restylane Silk in Santa BarbaraSince this new filler was designed specifically for the lip area, it contains smoother particles so it can give a more natural-looking result. Restylane Silk is not just for those who want plumper lips. It also works extremely well to restore aging lips (those that have volume and/or shape loss and an increase in vertical lines above the lip). We have been working with Restylane Silk for a couple of months now and our clinical staff loves it. If you want natural-looking, full, soft, luscious lips, book an appointment to try Restylane Silk.

FILLER SPECIAL AT EVOLUTIONS

As part of the launches of Restylane Lyft and Restylane Silk, we have received a limited number of discount coupon codes from Galderma for clients who receive multiple syringes of Galderma filler (Restylane, Perlane/Lyft, or Silk).

Clients receiving 2 syringes will receive an instant rebate of $120 off!

Clients receiving 3 syringes will receive an instant rebate of $180 off!

These rebates are in addition to the normal $200 off on second and third syringes, so it really is an amazing deal.

We only have 20 coupon codes available, so call now (805-695-2189) to take advantage of this amazing deal.

Please note that you must be in the Galderma Aspire program to receive the rebates. It is free and easy to sign up and those in the program will continue to get great rewards on all Galderma products (which also includes Dysport).

Injectable Week at Evolutions Santa Barbara Includes Dermal Fillers, Botox and Dysport

As most of our loyal clients know, Evolutions Medical & Day Spa in Santa Barbara has the Biggest Week of the Year right around the corner! Injectable Week happens once a year with big savings on your favorite dermal filler or wrinkle-reducer (Botox or Dysport). This year it begins on Monday, December 2nd, and lasts until Saturday, December 7th, 2013. We are booking appointments now for Injectable Week!

For those of you who are not as familiar with dermal fillers, Sculptra, and/or the wrinkle-reducers Botox and Dysport, we will happily share with you some information about each of them. Perhaps it will help you to make a decision about getting an injectable treatment or encourage you to add a new treatment to your anti-aging arsenal.

Botox and Dysport
Botox and Dysport treatments are one of our most popular services at Evolutions, year round. This is not surprising! In 2012, there were over 6 million Botox or Dysport treatments in the US. Botox and Dysport are forms of botulinum toxin type A. They are both injected under the skin to treat overactive muscles in the forehead area. Botox and Dysport block the signals to the muscle that tell them to contract, resulting in a smooth, frown-less forehead. Botox or Dysport can take from 1 to 7 days to “set in” and start working. Both are FDA approved and are deemed safe and effective in the treatment of facial wrinkles. Dysport is a smaller molecule than Botox, so the units are different (i.e. 20 units of Botox equal 60 units of Dysport). Results are temporary and last about 3 to 4 months.

Evolutions Santa Barbara Dermal Fillers Treatment Areas

Possible Treatment Areas for Dermal Fillers

Restylane and Perlane: Dermal Fillers
Restylane and Perlane are in the same family of products. They are both dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid that are formulated to act like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid. These are injected under the skin to fill in moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane can also be used to add fullness to the lips. Replacing volume lost in the face can help restore a more youthful appearance. Perlane differs from Restylane in the average size of the particles and the depth of the injection. Your Evolutions clinician will help you determine which product is best for you. Results are instantaneous and can last 6 months or more (in most cases).

Radiesse Dermal Filler
Radiesse is also a dermal filler. It differs from Restylane or Perlane in that it is comprised of calcium microspheres in gel. Radiesse is also injected under the skin to provide volume and structure in areas where volume has diminished. The bonus that Radiesse offers is that it works to stimulate your body to produce it’s own natural collagen. As the calcium gel is absorbed, your own natural collagen will remain behind, giving you volume and structure. Results are instantaneous and have been clinically proven to last one year or more.

Sculptra Aesthetic
Our newest treatment, Sculptra Aesthetic, is a bit different than hyaluronic dermal fillers or Radiesse. This new facial injectable does not give instantaneous results, instead subtle results are achieved over time. Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for years in dissolvable stitches. Sculptra works deep within the dermis to gradually restore the collagen foundation that is lost as we age. With a more solid foundation, fullness is steadily returned to facial wrinkles. Results can last two years or more. Most clients require a full treatment of Sculptra Aesthetic, which is an average of three injection sessions over a few months, for the best outcome. Full results are gradually seen over 3 to 6 months.

A Note About Dermal Fillers and Botox/Dysport Treatments
If you’ve never had a dermal filler or Dysport/Botox treatment, you will have to come in for a consultation with our Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Practitioner or Dr. Perkins prior to your first treatment. Call us today to book your complimentary consultation (or submit a consultation request online) and/or to make an appointment for Injectable Week (805-687-0212).

Evolutions Event Recap: Dermal Fillers in Santa Barbara

Yesterday’s event at Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara was a treat for everyone. Our rep from Medicis (the company who makes Restylane, Perlane, and Dysport) delivered a thorough overview on dermal fillers and answered many questions from the audience.  After the presentation, guests were invited to watch Dr. Perkins perform a dermal filler treatment so that they could witness the immediate effects that fillers have!

Here is a recap of the evening’s presentation:

What is Restylane?
Restylane is a dermal filler that is made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance in your skin that provides fullness and elasticity.  As we age, hyaluronic acid diminishes and the skin loses volume.  Hyaluronic acid recruits water to the skin to encourage fullness. Restylane, and Perlane (another dermal filler), are made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid so that it is not metabolized as fast as the hyaluronic acid that naturally occurs in the body and this gives clients a result that can last six months or more.

What can dermal fillers – Restylane and Perlane – do for me?
Restylane and Perlane can be used to to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.  Restylane can also be used for lip enhancement (for patients 21+ years). Restylane is a thinner product that is typically used for wrinkles, fine lines, and delicate areas. Perlane provides more structure and lift.  It is possible to use both products together. Which product you use is best determined by your clinician.

Where can dermal fillers be used?
The areas treated by Restylane or Perlane are:

  • laugh lines
  • marionette lines
  • lipstick lines
  • corners of mouth
  • lips (Restylane only)
Restylane Filler Santa Barbara

How long do dermal fillers last for?
When you get a filler treatment, there is little to no downtime, and you will see results immediately.  Effects of the filler will last at least  six months. In a clinical study, 95% of patients who returned for a second treatment 4.5 to 9 months after initial treatment continued to see results for up to 18 months. For some patients, receiving a second treatment before the first treatment completely wears off is a better value because they may achieve the same results with less product. For instance, a patient who had 2 syringes done in the first treatment, may only need 1 syringe in the follow up. Of course this may vary by individual.

How safe are dermal fillers?
Restylane was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2005. It is composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid which means there is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or development of allergic reactions to the proteins.  No allergy testing is required before use.  It is fully biocompatible.  Restylane is used in over 70 countries worldwide.

Are there side effects to Restylane or Perlane?
Some people may experience swelling at the injection site, redness, pain, tenderness or bruising up to about seven days after treatment.  Side effects vary depending on the individual. Some people will have no side effects. Any bruising is usually easily able to be covered by make-up.

How do I prepare for my filler treatment?
It is suggested that you stop the following medications and supplements one week prior to treatment: St. John’s Wart, high doses of Vitamin E, aspirin, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (ibuprofen) as these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site.

Are there people that should not have a dermal filler treatment?
Treatment is not recommended for people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18 years of age, or have a bleeding disorder. If you suffer from cold sores, discuss this with the clinician before treatment.

I’d like to discuss this further before scheduling a treatment …
At Evolutions we always offer a complimentary consultation so that you may have your questions answered and feel confident in your decision.  Schedule a consultation by calling 805.687.0212 or completing our online consultation form.

Dermal Fillers Provide Facial Volume and Facial Volume Matters!

Perlane Before and AfterWe often get asked what the difference is between “fillers” and Botox. Botox is a purified protein that is used to treat overactive muscles, temporarily relaxing them to smooth out the wrinkles. Botox is used in the upper face to most commonly treat (in order) the frown lines, crow’s feet, and the forehead. It can be used  in other areas of the face and in the neck, as well. Botox also effectively treats hyperhidrosis – excessive sweating – in the hands, feet, and armpits.

Dermal fillers are used to restore volume that is lost in the face as the aging process occurs. Dermal fillers are more commonly used in the lower face – in the cheeks, nasolabial folds, the nose, lips, pre and post-jowl, and the corners of the mouth. Fillers are also used in the brows, temporal and central forehead as well as around the eyes. Dermal fillers are temporary and last between six and twelve (or more) months depending on the brand of filler used. Prevelle Silk lasts the shortest amount of time and Radiesse generally lasts the longest.

Recently we ran across an article in NewBeauty.com that speaks about why facial volume matters and what can be done to restore fullness, either temporarily or permanently, to achieve smoother, younger-looking skin. The article states that we begin to lose facial fat “as early as our 20s, and it’s a downhill slide” from there. It goes on to say that “facial fat deteriorates with age, but weight loss and hormonal changes can speed up the process” as well. When this happens, we are left with sunken cheeks, a down-turned mouth, hallow eyes and a soft jaw. Dermal fillers, such as Radiesse, Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane, or Prevelle Silk can help “fix” these problem areas by plumping the skin, creating more firmness and definition in the face.

Now is the time to try dermal fillers and see how they can change your look! Perlane and Restylane are both offering rebates on dermal filler treatments from now until March 31, 2012.

Rebate Offer: Save $40 per syringe of Restylane (2 syringe minimum) or $50 per syringe of Perlane.

Schedule a complimentary consultation online or call Evolutions at 805.687.0212 to discuss which dermal filler would be best for your needs. Read the entire NewBeauty.com article here

Santa Barbara Dermal Fillers Restylane and Perlane Review and Recap

Last night at Evolutions Medical Spa Santa Barbara we hosted an event on Dermal Fillers to an at-capacity crowd. On hand was a representative from Medicis, the pharmaceutical company that produces the popular dermal fillers Restylane and Perlane, and also the anti-wrinkle neuro-modulator Dysport.

We have come to realize that many people do not know the difference between dermal fillers and neuro-modulators such as Botox and Dysport. Botox and Dysport get so much press that people often assume that Botox is the end-all solution to turning back the clock and “erasing” wrinkles! This is not necessarily the case for many people.

Before we get into an in-depth look at dermal fillers, we will give you a brief description of Botox / Dsyport and how they work in your face. Botox and Dysport are neuro-modulators that treat dynamic wrinkles in the upper portion of the face. Popular uses for both of these are for the lines across the forehead, the lines between the brows (often referred to as a “scowl”) and the lines on the outside of the eyes (“crows feet”). These neuro-modulators treat the cause of the wrinkle, which is the muscle beneath them that is creating the crease (or wrinkle). Botox or Dysport relaxes the muscle under the wrinkle and the skin smoothes out.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, provide volume to the face – most commonly used on the lower portion of the face – in places where volume has been lost. As a person ages, volume may be lost under the eyes (causing the under eye dark circles to look darker and the eyes to look sunken) and in the cheekbone area. Deep creases often develop from the side of the nose to the lips (nasiolabial folds) and even on either side of the lips. With the enhancement of dermal fillers, a person may regain the face that they had five or ten years ago, giving them a more alert, rested look.

Several brands of dermal fillers are available at Evolutions. The ones that were highlighted yesterday were Restylane and Perlane. These are made from hyaluronic acid, a complex sugar molecule, that is naturally produced in the body to help provide fullness and elasticity. Restylane is a smaller molecule and better for fine lines, lasting about 6 to 8 months. Perlane is made up of bigger Restylane molecules and typically used for deeper folds. Since the Perlane molecules are bigger, it takes the body longer to break them down and Perlane may last anywhere from 6 to 9 months.

A dermal filler treatment gives a person instantaneous results! Depending the depth of the creases that are being filled (and the number of areas being treated), a treatment may use up to three syringes (3 mL) of filler to achieve “full correction”. “Full correction” means using just the right amount of filler in the treatment areas of the face to get the results you want. How many syringes you will need is determined by Dr. Perkins (or the nurse) who is administering the treatment. Although you may feel that you do not want to purchase two or three syringes for “full correction”, doing this proves to be much more cost effective over time. A study by Medicis showed that if a person had “full correction” and came in for a follow-up treatment before all the dermal filler had broken down (typically between 4.5 and 9 months), they ended up getting half as much the second time because when layering hyaluronic acid it binds to itself.

A very revealing before-and-after interactive picture on the Medicis website showcases the dramatic effect that fillers can have on your face – view it here (use your mouse to “scroll” over the picture and see her face before fillers and after treatment).

Other dermal fillers that Evolutions carries include Radiesse (a much deeper structural filler), Juvederm and Prevelle Silk. Dr. Perkins has also developed a unique protocol of layering fillers, called the Layered Liquid Lift, that treats the entire face and can turn back the clock ten years. The Layered Liquid Lift typcially is done in a 90-minute session and the results last 12 to 18 months. A great alternative to a facelift!
