Laser Hair Removal, Vein Treatments, Stretch Mark Treatment and Body Contouring in Santa Barbara: Event Recap

Evolutions Medical Spa Santa Barbara and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins hosted an event last night dedicated to Getting Ready for Summer. Dr. Perkins thoroughly covered four topics about treatments offered to help beautify your body! If you are interested in any (or all!) of these services, please call Evolutions at 805.687.0212 to schedule a complimentary consultation.

Laser Hair Removal

What is most unique about our Santa Barbara laser hair removal technique is that we have multiple devices available to treat different hair and skin types which allows us to get better results. With a standard hair reduction treatments, most people see about a 70% reduction in hair growth. At Evolutions, we strive to do better than that because our lasers fit your hair, not the other way around!

About Laser Hair Removal:

  • Uses light energy to “injure” the hair follicle so it shrinks and has little, or no, hair growth.
  • We refer to it as “Permanent Hair Reduction” because the FDA does not allow it to be called “Permanent Hair Removal” since most people experience hair loss, but not complete removal.
  • Hair grows in cycles so multiple treatments are needed to insure that all the hair in the area gets treated.
  • The ideal candidate would have white skin and dark hair. Lighter hair, such as blond, red, white, grey, are more of a challenge to treat but at Evolutions we have a laser that has radiofrequency (which is essentially “color blind”) to treat the lighter hairs.
  • Read even more information about laser hair removal in Santa Barbara on our website.
  • Laser Vein Removal and Sclerotherapy Vein Treatments
Did you know that 80 million Americans have issues with veins? Vein problems are mostly genetic. If both your parents have vein problems, there is a 90% chance that you will too. The type of job you have can also contribute to vein problems (a job where you are standing all the time or sitting all the time), especially in combination with a genetic predisposition. One way to help prevent vein problems, or keep them asymptomatic, is to wear support hose. Small and medium-sized veins can be treated with either Laser Vein Removal or Sclerotherapy. We recommend scheduling a complimentary consultation to discuss which method would be best for your needs.

    About Laser Vein Removal:

  • At Evolutions, our laser vein therapy typically treats superficial veins to the deeper reticular veins.
  • The laser delivers pulses of light to cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is later reabsorbed by your body.
  • Most clients find that two to three treatments are sufficient and experience a stinging sensation, but local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required. Some clients choose to use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment.
  • Clients have seen significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment.
  • About Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment:

  • Sclerotherapy is a highly effective way to treat clusters of red, blue or purple veins (that frequently appear on the thighs, calves and ankles).
  • Traditional sclerotherapy injects a hyper tonic saline which can cause discomfort and burning.
  • Evolutions uses osmotic detergent agents instead of hyper tonic saline to make the treatment more comfortable.
  • The treated veins will disappear over the course of a few weeks.
  • Stretch Mark Removal
Stretch marks can affect both men and women. They are usually created during pregnancy and other periods of rapid growth due to dermal tearing with the epidermis intact. Frequently the stretch marks won’t tan, making the marks more obvious. At Evolutions, our goal is to rebuild the collagen and elastin in the dermis which helps to lessen the appearance of stretch marks.

    About Stretch Mark Removal:

  • Past stretch mark removal treatments have included laser but patients typically saw poor results.
  • Dr. Perkins has developed a unique protocol that is part of a 3-step process where patients have seen a 50 to 90 percent improvement. After treatment is completed, the area can even tan again!
  • Stretch mark removal is a series of four treatments.
  • Body Contouring and Cellulite Reduction
Cellulite is superficial fat right under the surface of the skin. The most common cause of cellulite is heredity, although hormones, smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet all have a partial effect on it. Evolutions goal in treating cellulite is to smooth the area and achieve volume reduction.

About Cellulite and Body Contouring With VelaShape:

  • VelaShape is the first and only FDA-approved device for cellulite and circumference reduction.
  • VelaShape utilizes bipolar radiofrequency to heat the tissue underneath and infrared light energy to heat the tissue on top plus a vacuum and mechanical massage.
  • The combination of the process above increases the metabolism of stored energy, increases lymphatic drainage and reduces or shrinks the size of the actual fat cells and fat chambers.
  • Over the course of a series of treatments, clients see a gradual smoothing of the skin surface with a noticeable reduction in cellulite.
  • Circumferential reduction, with a noticeable re-shaping of the treated area, also occurs.
  • Learn more about VelaShape Body Contouring on our website.
  • Evolutions Medical Spa Santa Barbara offers the best technology and innovative treatments for a wide variety of skin concerns. View all of our spa services! Hear what our clients have to say about us!

Finding a Great Medical Spa in Santa Barbara and Beyond

Chances are you may have stumbled across this blog because you are either searching for a medical spa in Santa Barbara or looking for information on a medical spa in your own area. At Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara we believe that putting an effort into finding a great, reputable spa is extremely important. Most of the services offered by medical spas – such as medical grade chemical peels, Botox and Dysport wrinkle treatments, dermal fillers, laser hair removal and more – should be done by a medical aesthetician, nurse or doctor.

Dr. Terry Perkins is the Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon who owns and oversees Evolutions Medical Spa. He offers advice and tips on how to find a great medical spa – whether it be in Santa Barbara or your hometown – on this informational Squidoo page.

How to Find an Excellent Medical Spa – Questions to Ask and Tips from Evolutions Medical Spa

At Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara we strongly encourage potential clients to ask questions and become informed before committing to a medical spa. In fact, many people are not familiar with the difference between a “medical” spa and a “day” spa – even less familiar with how to discern an okay medical spa from an excellent one. Read on for a bit of background and a few tips on how to find an excellent, trustworthy medical spa (like Evolutions!).

Medical spas, also known as medspas and medi-spas, have a “medical” focus as opposed to relaxation/pampering found at “day spas”. Medical spas offer non-invasive or minimally invasive medical aesthetic services for people who are looking to improve themselves without surgery or extended downtime. Many medical spas offer treatments such as medical grade chemical peels, injections of Botox or Dysport, injections of dermal fillers, laser hair removal and much more in an atmosphere that is more luxurious than a plastic or cosmetic surgeon’s office.

Important questions to ask when researching a medical spa:

    • Who is the medical director? Medical spas should be overseen by an appropriately qualified physician meaning those who specialize in aesthetic or skin-related fields such as a cosmetic or plastic surgeon or a dermatologist.

Evolutions Medical Spa is overseen by Dr. Terry J. Perkins, a double board certified cosmetic surgeon, who specializes in aesthetic facial surgery and liposuction and has been practicing for more than 30 years.

    • Where is the doctor’s main office? It is ideal for the doctor to be close by so that he is accessible for any patient’s needs.

Dr. Perkins is based in Santa Barbara, he practices cosmetic surgery at his Cosmetic Surgery Center Medical Group office that is just minutes from Evolutions.

    • Is the doctor available to see me at the spa to answer questions or available to examine me if there is a complication? It is important to note that procedures such as injections (of Botox, dermal fillers and the like), laser hair removal, FotoFacials, certain chemical peels, etc., are medical procedures that should be done by a trained medical professional with the same care and diligence that you would find in a doctor or surgeon’s office.

Dr. Perkins is always available for a consultation if there is a question or concern, scheduled through Evolutions.

    • If there is a complication, the doctor should be available to evaluate the situation. Does the doctor have normal hours at the spa? Knowing that the doctor is available certain days of the week at the medical spa for consultations and evaluations is tremendously important. This insures the doctor is playing an active role in the medical spa and that s/he would be available to see you upon request.

Dr. Perkins holds regular hours at Evolutions, seeing patients at the spa two days per week by appointment.

    • Did the medical director personally train the clinicians working at the spa? Training a clinician personally by the medical director indicates that s/he promotes uniformity in the treatment of patients to insure the best results. It also allows the medical director to evaluate the clinician and to provide further training, if necessary, to bring the clinician up to medical-grade standards.

Dr. Perkins personally trains the Evolutions’ nurses and clinicians. He meets with the Evolutions’ staff on a regular basis to insure everyone is kept up-to-date on what is going on at the medical spa.

We hope that you seek answers to these questions when looking for a great medical spa in your town. Brazilian Laser Hair Removal at Evolutions

Although summer is winding down, Brazilian laser hair removal is still hot at Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara! Why? With itsy-bitsy bikinis being so popular, it has become a priority for women of all ages to take care of their hair – or more appropriately, take care of removing their hair. Non-permanent hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, sugaring, threading or depilatory creams are less expensive, and work at removing hair, but the frequency for these methods adds up (once a day, once a month, etc.,) and your hair always grows back.

Brazilian laser hair removal, on the other hand, can put an end to your hairy situation. What sets Evolutions hair removal processes apart from other spas? Evolutions has four state-of-the-art modalities to remove unwanted hair while many other locations have only one hair removal device. This means that the clinician can find the best hair removal treatment that works with your skin color and hair type. A brief description of the four modalities follows:
    • The Comet is considered to be the new Gold Standard in laser hair removal systems.
    • The PPx uses patented photopneumatic therapy and is a painless treatment. It does not even require numbing cream.
    • The CoolGlide uses Nd:YAG technology and is ideal for darker skin types.
    • The ProWave is a programmable IPL and is able to cover large areas with very little discomfort.
    • Bonus! The Dual-Laze hair removal treatment combines the Comet and the PPX into each treatment using a proprietary protocol developed by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins, owner and overseer of Evolutions.

Laser hair removal is done in a series of treatments, depending on the growth cycle of your hair and determined by the clinician at Evolutions. Every person is unique and will have a varying response to treatment. After completing the initial series it is often necessary to come in for a single maintenance treatment every six to nine months. For that reason, the FDA requires that laser hair removal treatments be referred to as “permanent hair reduction” rather than “permanent hair removal.” That said, most people are very happy with the permanent clearance they are able to achieve from an initial series.

Evolutions does not just do Brazilian laser hair removal! Hair can be removed anywhere with the exception of immediately around the eyes and inside the nose and ears. Popular laser hair removal places are for the under arm, leg, and back, in addition to the bikini area.

At Evolutions we price laser hair removal by “time”, as opposed to ‘area’, because hairlines can vary from one individual to another. We encourage you to come in for a complimentary laser hair removal consultation and at that time an accurate price for a (5) treatment series package will be quoted. Fill out our contact form online or call us for an appointment 805.687.0212 today!
